The Berks Summer Classic Has Reached a New Era!
The Berks Summer Classic kicked off in thrilling fashion this week at Body Zone Sports and Wellness Complex in Wyomissing, with high-scoring games, heated rivalries, and early statements from teams looking to make a run at the Cup this summer.
Team New Era Hockey wasted no time making headlines in the opening matchup, dominating Palacios Dentistry in a lopsided 15-1 victory. The young, fast-paced squad overwhelmed their opponents from the opening puck drop, showcasing elite speed and offensive firepower. Leading the charge was Bray Frick, who exploded for an incredible 8-point performance in the season opener. If Week 1 was any indication, New Era Hockey is shaping up to be one of the top contenders in the league this summer.
In Game 2, defending champions Smokey Bones squared off against newcomer Seneca Dairy Systems, a team formed by the Alspaugh brothers — key contributors to Smokey Bones’ championship run last season. Seneca brought a gritty, physical style and battled hard throughout the game, but the experience and depth of Smokey Bones proved too much to handle. Smokey Bones skated away with a 7-3 victory behind strong offensive performances from Colby Moyer and Nate McFarlane, who each recorded 3-point nights. With several new additions to the roster, Smokey Bones appears hungry to defend their title and make another deep Cup run.
The last game of the weekend featured one of the most anticipated matchups as A. Moyer Masonry took on Verbero Hockey Co. There was no shortage of tension between these two teams after Verbero stunned top-seeded A. Moyer Masonry in last season’s playoffs behind a Logan Buch hat trick. This time, A. Moyer Masonry came in focused and motivated for revenge — and they got it. AMM stormed out to a commanding 6-1 lead before Verbero mounted a late push, but the comeback effort fell short as A. Moyer Masonry secured an 8-5 victory.
Week 1 delivered everything hockey fans could ask for: offense, intensity, rivalries, and plenty of storylines. One thing is already clear — the Berks Summer Classic looks faster, deeper, and more skilled than ever, and the race for the Cup is officially underway.
