Seneca's In The Win Column and A Loss for Verbero

Week 2 of the Berks Summer Classic brought more intensity, breakout performances, and another reminder that no lead — or matchup — is safe in this summer’s highly competitive league at Body Zone Sports and Wellness Complex in Wyomissing.

Friday night opened with A. Moyer Masonry taking on Seneca Dairy Systems in a tightly contested matchup. Despite missing several key players, AMM struck first when Alec Moyer capitalized on his own rebound after Seneca goaltender Joel Eisenhower made the initial stop on a breakaway chance. That early goal seemed to wake up Seneca’s offense, as the Alspaugh brothers began to take over the game. Travis and Bryant Alspaugh combined for 6 points and helped lead Seneca to their first win of the season with a hard-fought 4-3 victory. Alec Moyer and Cody Rotkiske each recorded 2 points for AMM in the losing effort.

Game 2 featured defending champions Smokey Bones against Palacios Dentistry. Smokey Bones came out flying early thanks to two quick goals from Chaz Kramlich, but Palacios refused to back down. Goals from Jon Martin, Dante Felice, and Tyler Pettoni helped Palacios battle back to tie the game 3-3 in the second period. However, Smokey Bones showed why they remain one of the league’s top teams, erupting for six goals in the third period to pull away for the win. Smokey Bones' leading point-scorer, Pete Karpovich, recorded a 6-point night! Even in defeat, Palacios goaltender Caleb Dinsdale continued to impress. Facing the highest shot volume in the league through two weeks, Dinsdale has stood tall under pressure and delivered countless highlight-reel saves to keep his team competitive every night.

Saturday night’s matchup between New Era Hockey and Verbero Hockey Co. started with another offensive explosion from New Era. With Verbero missing leading scorer Logan Buch and top linemate Chris Claycomb, New Era took advantage early and stormed out to a 4-goal first period lead. But the game took a concerning turn early in the second period when Verbero goaltender Sam Martini went down following a collision with New Era captain Bryce Witman. Martini was unable to return, and the game was ultimately called with New Era leading 6-0.

Through two weeks, the Berks Summer Classic continues to showcase high-end talent, physical play, and no shortage of storylines. From undefeated contenders to emerging underdogs, the race for the Cup is already heating up!
